As reported in an exclusive by The Sun, Jose Mourinho has tabled a bid to bring Roma defender Kostas Manolas to Old Trafford this month.
What’s the word?
Manchester United may have turned a corner on their form, winning their last 7 games in all competitions, but Jose Mourinho is still looking for January reinforcements and may have found his man at Roma.
The Sun report that Greek defender Kostas Manolas has already been the subject of a £32.5m bid this January, after talks to bring long-term United target Victor Lindelof from Benfica stalled.
The Italian club are said to be holding out for more money though, not keen to depart with their star man quite yet.
Worth the cash?
With defensive partners Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in such good form right now, there’s an argument to be made that Mourinho doesn’t need to make any defensive signings in January.
An injury to either though and United are suddenly relying on defenders who have failed to make an impact under Mourinho.
Despite being just 25, Manolas has already made 270 career league appearances in Greece and Italy. He’s been in fine form for Roma this season, helping them to 6 clean sheets in 20 appearances for the club.
A Greek international with 27 caps, Manolas is quick, strong in the air and has the ability to play his way out of defence, sparking attacks in the midfield.
The reported £32.5m is a significant chunk of money but in Manolas, United could land one of the best defensive options in Europe.
