Tottenham were knocked out of their second domestic competition in the space of a few days as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. However, there was a silver lining in the shape of Juan Foyth, who looked composed at the back – a quality that was a commodity for Spurs on Sunday, as crazy mistakes from defenders ultimately cost them.
On the chalkboard
Foyth had a debut to forget in the Premier League – the 20-year-old gave away two second half penalties to provide Wolves with a route back into their November clash, although the Lilywhites’ three goals proved enough to secure the points – but has since been very impressive.
An excellent passer of the ball, the former Estudiantes man will likely shape Spurs’ defence alongside Davinson Sanchez for years to come, but his lack of physicality could be detrimental when the Hornets visit on Wednesday.
Pochettino should be ruthless in his selection and drop the centre-back despite his impressive performance at the weekend, otherwise he risks the starlet being completely mismatched.
Thunder and lightning
Watford captain Troy Deeney might not be one of the most watchable strikers in the game, but he makes up for his lack of technique by putting himself about and winning his 50/50s.
Foyth has struggled against some of the more physical forwards and Deeney definitely falls under that category – the big number 9 would likely get on the youngster’s toes right from the off and, as we have seen before, the South American youngster is a confidence player and may be liable to make a mistake when put under constant pressure.
Watford boss Javi Gracia favours a 4-2-2-2 formation, with former Barcelona speedster Gerard Deulofeu buzzing around and making dangerous runs in behind to stretch the defence – Foyth might have the pace to keep up with the hot-heeled attacker, but he may already be occupied by Deeney.
Pochettino must be brave and bring Toby Alderweireld back into defence for this game – losing three on the bounce cannot happen and Spurs are already without Dele Alli and Harry Kane, making their task big enough already.
Dropping Foyth might anger the White Hart Lane faithful but they will surely be more enraged if the north London emerge with anything but a victory.
Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin may be out for the season but it’s given him a chance to show off his new accessory. Check out the video above to see for yourself…
